Acute bronchitis is one of the 10 best reasons for Americans to visit the doctor. High season is autumn and winter. Symptoms include persistent cough with or without upper respiratory tract (sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, increased sputum production, and fever). Most cases are caused by viruses, including influenza, RSV, and adenoviruses. Other causes include bacterial infection, allergy to dust or smoke or asthma.
The job of a doctor is to eliminate serious causes of acute bronchitis as influenza and pneumonia. These conditions may increase morbidity and mortality especially among young and old. Therefore, in case of fever, cough and lung congestion has increased (Which is not clear with cough), X-rays and antibiotics may be needed. For influenza, an anti virus is useful if started within 48 hours. Bacterial pneumonia requires antibiotics.
For simple uncomplicated acute bronchitis, treatment options do not include antibiotics. Overuse of unnecessary antibiotics causes bacteria resistant to drugs such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the community. That is why we often suggest some or all of the following:
- mucolytics (eg Mucinex ® or increasing consumption of water)
- medicine against cough cough
- albuterol inhaler
- analgesics
- rest
Since acute bronchitis involves increased production of mucus triggered by infection or allergens, one of objectives is to clear secretions. The body does this naturally with the cough reflex. Another method is to use aromatic oils.
In 2003, Hasani studied the effects of aromatic oils on the clearance of lung secretions in people with chronic bronchitis. He concluded that the direct application of essential oils on the skin helped to clarify the respiratory secretions. Some oils are recommended:
- Eucalyptus
- Peppermint
- Ravensara
Massage a drop or two in the chest region and dilute with oil sweet almond or olive oil. Then apply a warm compress for 15-20 minutes. Repeat several times a day. Use Caution to young and old the oils can cause a rash, so test a small area of skin first before applying to the entire chest.
